Shopify Payments on hold for standard review

A standard review is a check Shopify says it runs on Shopify Payments accounts through the life of the account. This page explains what that hold means, which records Shopify's help center describes, and how to organize a response. It does not say that a hold will be lifted, and it does not give a date.

This is general information, not legal advice.

What a standard review hold means

Shopify's page on Shopify Payments account holds says Shopify Payments accounts are subject to standard reviews throughout the account's lifespan. The same page says every store that sets up Shopify Payments is subject to that standard review process. After setup, the store can accept payments right away. If Shopify's banking partners need more information about the business, Shopify puts the Shopify Payments account on hold until those details can be checked.

While the account is on hold, Shopify says you can keep working in the store, and payouts through Shopify Payments do not go out. In most cases customers can still check out. In some cases the store cannot accept new orders. Shopify says to read the banner in the Shopify admin, or the message sent to the store owner, to see which of those applies to the store.

Holds are account-specific. Shopify lists information requirements, incorrect bank account details, and product eligibility as possible reasons, and also lists supportability, sanctions, and creditor or legal actions. A creditor hold is a different notice. Shopify's account-holds page says the payment processor places that hold after a legal notice, and that Shopify cannot remove it. Read the banner so you know which notice you have before you gather records.

Only the store owner can open Shopify Payments account details. Shopify says a staff member may see a generic prompt telling them to contact the store owner.

What Shopify typically asks for

Shopify does not publish one list that every standard review uses. The banner and the upload page in your admin are the list for your store. These are the records Shopify's own help pages describe.

Identity, address, and business details

Shopify's account setup page says Shopify and its banking partners collect and check information about you and your business. That includes the identity of the business, the people linked to it, and how those people are related to the business.

Photo identification

The same page says photo ID can be submitted as a PNG or JPEG. Photograph the original in color, with all four borders in the frame and every detail readable. Shopify says not to send a scan, a copy, or a screenshot. If the record was issued as a digital file, send the original PDF with no changes and with every page included.

Proof of address and business records

Shopify says proof of address and business documents can also be PDF. The name, date of birth, legal business name, registration number, and address on the file need to match the Shopify Payments account. If a file is not accepted, the upload page states the reason, such as a cropped photo or a name that does not match.

Tax identification and other business details

Shopify's page on payout timing says financial regulations require Shopify to check tax identification numbers and other business details. If there is a problem with that information, a hold on payouts might be applied. Answer the request that appears in the Shopify admin or in the store owner's messages.

Anything else the review names

Shopify's page on acceptable business practices and risk evaluation says a review can place a temporary hold on payouts or charges, and that you might be asked for additional documentation. Reserve terms and holds are sent to the store owner's registered email address and shown in Merchant Alerts in the Shopify admin.

Where to upload

Shopify's account setup page says documents are accepted only through the secure banners in the Shopify admin. Files sent another way are redacted and cannot be used. Follow the upload page that the banner opens.

Document checklist

Pack only what the notice or the upload page names. Skip a line that your banner does not mention.

  • A copy of the admin banner or Merchant Alert, so the request is written down
  • Photo ID of the account representative, full frame and in color, matching the name and date of birth on the account
  • A business registration or formation record showing the legal name and registration number on the account
  • Proof of address for the person or the business named in the notice
  • The tax identification record, if the notice asks for it
  • A bank record, if the notice is about bank account details
  • A one-line note next to each file saying which account field it matches

How to organize a response

  1. 1.Sign in as the store owner. Write down every item the banner or the upload page names, in the same words.
  2. 2.Collect those items and leave out records the notice does not ask for.
  3. 3.Before you upload, check that the name, date of birth, legal business name, registration number, and address match the Shopify Payments account.
  4. 4.Photograph paper originals in color with all four edges visible. If the record was issued as a PDF, keep the original file and all of its pages.
  5. 5.Name each file for what it is and the date, such as photo-id-2026-10-04.png.
  6. 6.Put a one-page cover at the front: store name, the wording of the hold notice, the date you saw it, and a numbered list of the files.
  7. 7.Upload through the secure banner in the Shopify admin.
  8. 8.Keep a dated log of what you uploaded and of any later notice in the admin.

Shopify reads what you send and decides what happens next. This page does not set a date for that decision, and it does not say that payouts will start again.
